Hero Spotlight: HICAP Counselor Volunteers for 16 years… and Counting!
Volunteers are the ‘gifts’ that make free Medicare counseling sessions accessible for nearly 4,000 seniors each year. Elder Law & Advocacy is honored to recognize the 30+ outstanding individuals whose generosity is the core of the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP).
This year, the longest serving volunteer, Edna Rosenthal, was presented with the Diamond Award at the Annual HICAP Appreciation Luncheon – and she is a true ‘diamond.’ Edna is a retired sales and advertising professional who has volunteered with ELA for sixteen years! As a HICAP counselor, Edna meets twice monthly with Medicare beneficiaries at the Encinitas Senior Center.
What is Edna’s motivation to keep going after so many years of volunteering?
“I find volunteering with HICAP very satisfying. I find it interesting and I like helping people to solve problems. I enjoy when the client says, “I didn’t know that! Thank you!”… I guess I’m just a people person.” – Edna
HICAP volunteers, like Edna, come from a variety of professional backgrounds, ranging from engineering and biochemistry, to business management and jurisprudence. They have the desire to help older people to make informed decisions about their healthcare, and to solve the questions and issues that arise from the complexities of Medicare plans and benefits. HICAP volunteers go through extensive training to become Medicare experts, devoting a minimum of three days per month – with the average length of service to the program being over five years!
To honor the work of this dedicated and caring group of HICAP Counselors, ELA hosted an annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on May 11th, 2012, at the Top of the Park Restaurant near Balboa Park. Together this group has contributed over 179 years of free counseling sessions to seniors needing assistance with Medicare and Medi-Cal.
Elder Law & Advocacy’s staff and volunteers wish to thank the following sponsors for making this year’s appreciation luncheon a special day for these volunteer heros!
